The Centre for Neurosciences and Cell Biology of the University of Coimbra (CNC-UC) and the Coimbra Institute for Clinical and Biomedical Research (iCBR), joined by the research consortium CIBB, promote a new edition of the Brain Awareness Week, taking place during the month of March 2023.

The initiative aims to raise awareness of scientific breakthroughs and findings in the field of neurosciences, as well as to promote brain health literacy. Brain Awareness Week is a global event which takes place every year in March.

"Our researchers have made a huge commitment to society by engaging in science communication initiatives. Brain Awareness Week is one of those initiatives. We have been promoting scientific culture in the area of neurosciences for over 25 years in schools, in bars, on the radio, in parks, on buses, with exhibitions, in theatres, among others," explains Sara Varela Amaral, coordinator of the CIBB communication office and responsible for the event.

This year, the event features several face-to-face and online activities that aim to raise awareness on the importance of studying the brain and its pivotal role for a healthy life, as well as bringing science and scientists to different locations in the city.

Brain Awareness Week is an international initiative promoted by the Dana Foundation and the Federation of European Neuroscience Societies (FENS). In Portugal, it is organised by the Portuguese Society for Neuroscience and "Ciência Viva", with the support of the Institute for Interdisciplinary Research of the University of Coimbra.
