77 scientists from the University of Coimbra (UC) are in the top 2% of the most cited scientists in 2022, out of 210,198 researchers worldwide (including 790 from Portuguese higher education and research institutions).

The “World's Top 2% Scientists” list is a comprehensive database of the most highly cited scientists, providing two separate datasets for career-long and single-year impact metrics. Developed by a team of experts from Stanford University (USA), the study was coordinated by John Ioannidis, who is also the ERA Chair of the EXCELScIOR project, based at the University of Coimbra.

Forty-six UC scientists are also included in the career-long impact list, out of 204,644 researchers, including 572 from Portuguese institutions.

Among the 22 scientific fields and 174 subfields analysed, the University of Coimbra scientists most cited in 2022 stand out for instance in the fields of Engineering (Energy, Materials, Transports, Electrical & Electronic Engineering), Chemistry, Biology (Marine Biology & Hydrobiology, Ecology), and Clinical Medicine (Pharmacology & Pharmacy, Ophthalmology & Optometry, Arthritis & Rheumatology, Obstetrics & Reproductive Medicine, General & Internal Medicine), among others.

As for the career-long impact list, UC scientists lead in areas such as pharmacology and pharmacy, physics, chemistry, neurology and neurosurgery, artificial intelligence, biotechnology, engineering (civil, electrotechnical, energy) or environmental sciences.

The data presented in this study, published by the prestigious publisher Elsevier and collected from Scopus, measure scientists' citation indexes, impact and productivity worldwide. Career-long data extend to the end of 2022 and single-year citations refer to citations received in calendar year 2022.
