The University of Coimbra (UC) ranked 3rd in the 2022 Gastão Cunha Ferreira Indicator (GCFI) - Universities.

The regular publication of the GCFI - universities results allows society at large to follow the progress of the international patenting activity of inventions originating in Portuguese universities over time. This creates positive impacts on the Portuguese innovation ecosystem as a whole, resulting in greater transparency and enabling the evaluation of public policy effectiveness, including those related to investment in innovation and progress, key factors for the country's economic and technological development.

Created and published for the first time in 2014, the GCF Indicator is a study on the international patenting activity of inventions originating in Portugal, including two categories – companies and universities. The authors, who work in one of the oldest Intellectual Property consultancy firms in the country, decided to pay tribute to its founder, Gastão Cunha Ferreira, naming the study after him. This study is conducted on a regular basis and published every year, being an important contribution for learning about the most innovative companies and universities in Portugal.

In 1938, Gastão da Cunha Ferreira achieved his long-standing goal: to open his own consultancy firm dedicated to Intellectual Property matters. He dedicated his life to the study of Intellectual Property, to which he contributed as personal practitioner or through various associations to which he belonged.
