Next academic year, the University of Coimbra (UC), the University of Nantes (France) and the University d'Annunzio (Chieti-Pescara, Italy) will jointly provide the new Erasmus Mundus Master in Planetary Geosciences.

Created with the aim of providing students with a solid training in a collaborative environment, in a field that has been strongly growing in the last decades, as shown by the high number of space missions, the 'Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters' (EMJM) in Planetary Geosciences will bring together innovative teaching practices and methodologies, with a specific focus on the use of new technologies, such as virtual reality. Students will also have the opportunity to interact with technological companies linked to the development of instrumentation and services for the space industry.

Under this collaboration, the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the University of Coimbra (FCTUC) will be responsible for the subjects of introduction to planetary sciences, remote sensing, image processing and computational tools and data analysis, in addition to the supervision of master's theses. Classes will take place at the Physics Department, also involving the Departments of Mathematics and Earth Sciences.

Funded by the European Commission through the granting of 15 scholarships per year to the best candidates from the European Union or third countries, this new Master's Degree has a duration of 24 months spent in Portugal (1st semester), Italy (2nd semester) and France (3rd semester). The thesis work will be developed in the last semester in one of the associated institutions.

The project is supported by about two dozen institutions, including universities, research laboratories and space agencies, spread across the globe. The EMJM also has the collaboration of start-ups developing technological solutions for application in the space area. At the end of the course, students are awarded a joint master's diploma.

The degree has been accredited by the Portuguese national agency A3ES and the first edition will start in September 2023. Applications are now open at https://geoplanet-impg.eu/en/apply.
