Marcos Tenente, a researcher at the Coimbra Institute for Systems Engineering and Computers (INESC-Coimbra), and PhD student of the Doctoral Programme in Sustainable Energy Systems, as part of the Energy for Sustainability of the University of Coimbra (EfS-UC) initiative, has just been awarded the “Young Researcher Award” by the Portuguese Association for Energy Economics, an affiliate of the International Association of Energy Economics (IAEE).

The prize distinguishes the article "Eco-efficiency assessment of the electricity sector: Evidence from 28 European Union countries", published in the prestigious scientific journal "Economic Analysis and Policy" , in co-authorship with Patrícia Pereira da Silva and Carla Henriques, researchers of the Centre for Business and Economics Research (CeBER) and of INESC-Coimbra and professors at the Faculty of Economics of the UC (FEUC) and ISCAC|Coimbra Business School.

According to the authors, the study focused on assessing the eco-efficiency of the consumption and production value chains of the electricity sector in the European Union. "Overall, we may conclude that the countries that have promoted the efficient deployment of renewable energy by gradually dismantling fossil fuel production have enhanced their eco-efficiency potential by reducing emissions produced by the electricity sector and stimulating the growth of the added value they create."
