The announcement of the winners and the final programme of the 37th World Cultural Council Award Ceremony, which the University of Coimbra (UC) will host on the 29th and 30th November 2022, will take place tomorrow, the 20th September. The public presentation of the winners of the prestigious Albert Einstein, José Vasconcelos and Leonardo da Vinci Awards, granted by the World Cultural Council (WCC), will be held at 11:00 am at Sala do Senado.

The UC will be the first Portuguese university to host the World Cultural Council Award Ceremony, which has been held at renowned institutions across the globe, including the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Oxford University and the University of Princeton. It will also be the first time in the history of the awards programme where all three WCC awards will be presented at the same event – until now, the Albert Einstein Award was delivered annually, while the José Vasconcelos and the Leonardo da Vinci awards were delivered alternately.

Since 1984, the “Albert Einstein” World Award of Science, the “José Vasconcelos” World Award of Education and the “Leonardo da Vinci” World Award of Arts have been bestowed on dozens of distinguished scientists, educators and artists who have made ground-breaking achievements in their own fields and have worked to promote tolerance, peace and understanding for the well-being of humankind and the environment. In 2019, the “Leonardo da Vinci” World Arts Award was presented to the film producer Paulo Branco, who became the first Portuguese to receive a WCC award.

At this year's ceremony, the World Cultural Council – an international non-profit organization made up of academics, scientists and university leaders from all over the world – will also recognize young researchers from the University of Coimbra who have developed outstanding work in the areas of science, education and the arts. Their names will also be announced this Tuesday.

The announcement of the full programme of the 37th World Cultural Council Award Ceremony and the names of the awardees will take place in a session with the presence of the Vice-Rector of the University of Coimbra for Culture and Open Science, Delfim Leão, of the Executive Director of the World Cultural Council, Esteban Meszaros, and the Rector of the University of Coimbra, Amílcar Falcão.
