European Researchers' Night is back!

The European Researchers' Night is back to Universidade de Coimbra (UC). Each one of you will have a preponderant role for the success of this edition that will happen in September 24th 2021, between 16h00 and 23h00.

The Institute of Interdisciplinary Research (iiiUC), as representative of the University of Coimbra, is part of a national consortium that launched the theme SCICLI - SCIENCE FOR CLIMATE | SCIENCE FOR THE CLIMATE. In this edition of NEI, we intend to help answer the question: How can science contribute to the knowledge about the causes and effects of climate change and climate neutrality by 2050?

Thus, we want to bring the University and its researchers even closer to the civil society, promoting real opportunities for communities to share their concerns and expectations about Research, Science and Global Change. Through the various activities proposed by you, we want to promote awareness among citizens, especially the younger ones, for Research and Innovation committed to the development of green technology, industry and transport, as well as preservation of ecosystems and natural resources.

This year we joined the best of both worlds, a face-to-face program and an online program (similar to last year's edition),

This way, iiiUC, in collaboration with the Science Museum, the R&D Units and the several Science Centres will promote, during the afternoon and evening of September 24th, the Science Route that will unite the University with Coimbra's Upper and Lower Town and will bring researchers and citizens closer together.

The event will feature more than 50 activities, led by more than 250 researchers from 25 R&D Units and Science Centres of the University of Coimbra. The event counts with the precious support of about 50 associates of the Coimbra Downtown Promotion Agency, who are shopkeepers and merchants from Coimbra's Alta and Baixa areas that will be side by side with our researchers during this event.

Due to the atmospheric forecast of rain, we had to relocate some points of Researchers. Thus:

  • Points 1-5 were relocated to Rua Larga;
  • Points 16, 18, 19, 37, 39, 40 were moved to Liga dos Combatentes, as well as Speed Dating Point 2; '
  • Points 20, 21, 31, 34, 44 and Speed Dating Point 3 and Information Point | European Corner | NEI 2021 were moved to Arnado Tower;
  • Speed Dating 4 was moved to Hotel Oslo.

Our Webapp has all the updated information.

The Science Route can be explored through the webapp at noiteeuropeiadosinvestigadores.uc.pt.

The online programme will include activities from the various consortium partners and will be available to all on the NEI platform at noitedosinvestigadores.org .

Both programmes will start even before the big night, with the aim of promoting and disseminating NEI 2021. Three pre-event initiatives will take place:

  • Science Fridays | Mini-Science Shows at Largo da Portagem and Praça 8 de Maio at 16h30 and 18h30, respectively, on Fridays 10 and 17 September 2021. These events will act as teasers for NEI 2021.
  • Day before Night | In this activity, the University of Coimbra (UC) will promote awareness activities in schools of the Coimbra Region, through practical activities (taking into account the health measures in force) in schools. UC researchers will take their activities and science to schools as a teaser for the NEI. These visits will take place before the NEI, during the week of 20 to 23 September.
  • Online Open Day, 21 September, in which schools will be able to register and access activities online! Programme and registrations are available here.

The European Researchers' Night (NEI) at the University of Coimbra (UC) is for everyone!

All scientific areas are invited to propose activities for NEI, whether they contribute directly or indirectly to the SCICLI - SCIENCE FOR CLIMATE | SCIENCE FOR THE CLIMATE theme, that is to say to the understanding of climate change and/or adaptation of communities and Man towards carbon neutrality.

The challenge we propose to all researchers is to think of activities for the NEI that are ecologically responsible, contributing to the strengthening of awareness and civic action for a more sustainable future.

The NEI 2021 is aligned with the commitment made by the University of Coimbra to the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations Agenda 2030.
