Jessica Cantlon, Time Magazine's Person of the Year 2017, discusses women's rights in academia with UC womenresearchers

In 2017, Jessica Cantlon was chosen as Time's Person of the Year as one of the "Silence Breakers" as part of the #Metoo movement, being publicly recognised for her contributions to combating sexual harassment in science and continuing to speak out about the impact of sexual harassment on women's careers and the retaliation she suffered as a whistleblower.

On 22 March 2024, a group of almost 30 UC researchers met to discuss women's rights in academia, including the issue of harassment. Jessica Cantlon, a researcher and professor at Carnegie Melon University in the United States, who in 2017 was chosen as Time's Person of the Year as one of the "Silence Breakers" in the context of the #Metoo movement, told her experience on the subject. After her talk, the researchers discussed the barriers faced by women in academia.

Women researchers from different career stages and members of the GendER@UC EEA Grants project team were present. In a face-to-face format, the meeting was aimed at female PhD researchers at the University of Coimbra at the Design Thinking Laboratory of the Student Hub, Polo 1.
