The strategic areas of the University of Coimbra aggregate scientific domains in which the university has considerable critical mass, allowing it to present its scientific research capacity in a differentiated way to other similar institutions, which can be, at the same time, emerging scientific domains with visible international expansion.

The strategic areas are inclusive and representative of the scientific ecosystem of the University of Coimbra, and are aligned with societal challenges.

The organization of research in the Strategic Areas aims to:

• stimulate the interdisciplinary scientific activity of excellence, and to promote its dissemination and transfer to society;

• boost the development of new knowledge by responding to complex scientific issues and societal challenges;

• strengthen the presence of the University of Coimbra in international scientific networks;

• map, update, and guarantee the national and international visibility of the scientific, technological and critical thinking capacity installed in the R&D Units of the University of Coimbra.
