Description

Inflammation is an important clinical and research topic, involving a complex set of interactions among soluble factors and cells that can arise in any tissue in response to an injury. This process normally leads to recovery and to healing, however, if targeted destruction and assisted repair are not properly phased, inflammation can lead to persistent tissue damage.

Biomarkers are functional, molecular/biochemical indicators of physiological or pathological processes. A crucial area of personalized medicine is to use biomarkers to provide vital information in determining disease prognosis, in predicting response to therapies, in establishing baseline risk and also adverse events and drug interactions.

The mission of this group is to investigate cellular mechanisms of disease in order to establish novel biomarkers and conveying multiple inflammation induced pathologies during the whole human lifespan, unraveling pathways linked to each specific disease. As a multidisciplinary team we fully intend to link our clinical understanding of disease and the interplay between disease and biomarkers.

Our group encompasses a wide range of expertise in medicine, cellular and molecular biology, cancer, reproductive science and immunology.

We have established national international collaborations with different research groups (University of Toronto; Instituto Português de Oncologia Porto; Nova Medical School,CINTESIS - Center for Health Technology and Services Research University of Porto Porto Portugal, Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Montpellier France).

Key targets of our group currently include aging, allergy, dentistry, obesity, diabetes, urological and brain cancers, pregnancy disorders, respiratory and renal diseases.
