Course presentation

The Bachelor’s in Economics (LE – Licenciatura em Economia) promotes learning the fundamental knowledge and skills needed to perform specialized functions in the field of economics. The chosen approach is based on the development of basic competences capable of underpinning critical thinking in order to sustain diversified career paths. In addition to the basic training in Macroeconomics and Microeconomics, the LE provides training in Quantitative Methods and Management, as well as in complementary areas to the economic and business sciences. The degree also aims to promote activities that ensure the consolidation of knowledge, teamwork and the acquisition of transversal competences, enabling the access to a future career path. In order to reinforce the degree’s international orientation, the course offers curricular units taught in English and promotes international mobility programs.

Curricular structure

The Degree in Economics (1st cycle), which lasts three years (six semesters), is awarded to those who obtain 180 ECTS, divided into compulsory (138 ECTS) and optional (42 ECTS) curricular units.

The 1st year consists entirely of compulsory curricular units (60 ECTS).

The 2nd year consists of 8 compulsory curricular units (48 ECTS) and 2 optional curricular units (6 ECTS from the Quantitative Methods / Information Systems Group, and 6 ECTS from the Management Group).

The 3rd year consists of 4 compulsory curricular units (30 ECTS) and 5 optional curricular units (30 ECTS) - 2 from the Economics Group, 1 from the Management Group, 1 from the Multidisciplinary Group and 1 from FEUC Free.

FEUC Award 1st Cycle

The “FEUC Award 1st Cycle”“ ("FEUC Exemplar 1º CICLO") is a merit award designed to honour the best students in the Economics, Sociology, Management and International Relations degrees, encouraging them to continue their studies and carry out scientific research at the Faculty. This award consists of offering the best student of one of the four degrees a monthly research grant of €350 for each academic year for 18 consecutive months, starting in October of the academic year following the year in which the degree was completed.

Access to a higher education course

The students with a degree in economics have the skills to apply for a 2nd cycle course. Find more information about FEUC's postgraduate programmes here.

The degree in Economics provides access to various 2nd cycle courses at FEUC, including the Master's in Accounting and Finance (MCF – Mestrado em Contabilidade e Finanças). This master's programme provides, among other things, the skills to become a Certified Accountant. For this purpose, as part of the Management Degree, the students must take the courses mentioned in the LIST OF COURSES TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THE PROFESSION OF CERTIFIED ACCOUNTANT.

In addition to the various curricular units (compulsory and optional) included in the study plan for the Management Degree, this document also refers to the curricular units of the Master’s in Accounting and Finance to be taken later as part of this master's programme.

The Economics graduates are qualified to work in central and local administration, banking and other financial institutions, regulatory bodies and company management.
