AT THE FACULTY OF ECONOMICS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF COIMBRA

SIX CONVERSATIONS ABOUT / FOR PEACE

If you want peace, prepare peace. It is in this spirit that the Faculty of Economics of the University of Coimbra (FEUC) carries out a cycle of “Six Conversations about/for Peace”. The initiative is curated by José Manuel Pureza, a professor at FEUC, and includes Daniel Oliveira, Rita Rato, Francisco Ferreira, Cândida Pinto, Cristina Roldão and José Tolentino Mendonça.

In addition to the silence of guns, social justice, ecological justice, justice with diversity, justice with historical memory and the tension between the utopia of peace and its practical realization will be the themes of the six conversations. This broad understanding of peace and the commitment to its concrete affirmation has marked, for many years, research and teaching developed at FEUC, especially in the scientific field of International Relations.

At a time when the war in Europe joins the wars that have marked other geographies for so long, it is imperative to oppose the discourses of legitimizing war and conforming to it with a serious and profound reflection on the different registers of peace. The university is required much more than a competent explanation of wars, the production of robust thinking on peace, on its different dimensions and on the instruments for its realization.

FEUC assumes this responsibility. Hence the title “about / for”: this is an initiative that intends not only to discuss peace, but, more than that, to turn this discussion into an instrument of those who are committed to the struggle for peace and all its dimensions.

The fifth Conversation about/for Peace – “Peace is made of work with diversity” – is promoted by Cristina Roldão, sociologist. It takes place at room Keynes, on the 14th of March, at 6 pm.
