Support Fund for Doctoral Students - FAE

The Support Fund for Doctoral Students (FAE) aims to stimulate quality in the research carried out by doctoral students, through a funding that strengthens the conditions for their inclusion in the international scientific community.

The FAE supports the research work of doctoral students, encouraging active participation, through the presentation of papers at prestigious scientific meetings/conferences, as an intermediate step towards submitting work to reputable scientific journals.

This fund takes the form of a grant to cover, in part or in full, the costs incurred with these presentations, namely registration, travel and accommodation. The FAE can also be used to access or purchase other resources or services that are essential to the students' research work.

This support only applies when the activities are not integrated in other types of funding or cannot be supported by other sources of funding. The granting of this fund is always subject to the decision the Dean of the Faculty of Economics of the University of Coimbra.

Access

The access to this fund is made through an application under the following terms:

  • FAE accepts applications from PhD candidates whose thesis project has already been registered and approved.
  • The number of ECTs mustn’t overcome 1.5 times the number of ECTs envisaged for the duration of the correspondent PhD course.
  • Only students whose tuition fees are up to date at the time of the application and at the time of the expenditure can access this fund.
  • In order to apply to this fund with the intent of participating in a conference or scientific meeting, you must attach to your application form the following items: a statement from the organization of the event you are going to take part in, stating that they accept your project; a statement from your doctoral advisor stating the pertinence of your paper as well as its quality; a budget estimate for the expenses which will have to be documented later for the purposes of justifying the grant.
  • The decision criteria will be: the quality of the scientific meeting/conference at which the paper is to be presented, the justification of the relevance of the paper regarding the applicant's research program, the amount available for funding and the amounts used by the student in the previous year.
  • Funding is awarded in accordance with the Regulamento de bolsas diversas of the University of Coimbra’s (Miscellaneous Grants Regulations of the University of Coimbra) (Short-term grants for travel as part of research or university extension activities). PhD students whose application has been accepted must submit the documentation specified on the application form.
  • The FAE can also be used to access or acquire other resources or services that are essential for the students' research work, this requires a detailed justification of said needs. The request must be accompanied by a statement from the doctoral advisor justifying the need for the research work.
  • The publications and communications that are a result of a research paper funded by FAE must mention the support granted by FEUC, and state that the author is a doctoral student affiliated to the Faculty of Economics of the University of Coimbra.

Application

The application must be formalized no later than 45 days before the date of the Scientific Meeting or the acquisition of other services/resources.

How to apply

Please fill in the application form and send it to eea@fe.uc.pt, you must also attach the following:

  • The doctoral advisor’s statement
  • The acceptance of the paper (only applies to scientific meetings/conferences)
  • abstract of the paper (only applies to scientific meetings/conferences)

Accepted applications

Documents to submit (you must submit the following documents no later than 15 days after the event)

  • include the invoices/receipts of the expenses you would like to be reimbursed for under the University’s of Coimbra’s name (VAT: 501617582)
  • Boarding passes (round-trip tickets)
  • Certificate of attendance at the conference
  • Brief mission statement
  • Full paper in a pdf format
