A team of Portuguese and international researchers coordinated by Professor Eric Font from the Department of Earth Sciences of the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Coimbra won an R&D project from the Science and Technology Foundation to study speleothems in Portugal. Speleothems are secondary mineral deposits formed in caves and represent excellent records of Quaternary climate changes, as well as variations in the Earth's magnetic field. Since the chronology of the speleothems is calibrated through accurate radiometric dating, the magnetic, geochemical and mineralogical signatures preserved in the speleothems' thin laminations provide high-resolution climate proxies, from a sub-annual to a millennial scale.
