An international study, in which Susana Gonçalves, a DCV researcher participated, argues that the conservation of aquatic fungi, rarely considered, urgently needs to be recognized as a management priority. The study was published in the scientific journal Frontiers in Ecology and the Environment and focused on the role of aquatic fungi, the threats they face and the pathways to their protection. The research, led by scientists from the Center for Biology of the Czech Academy of Sciences, fears that these threats could lead to the reduction of populations and even the complete loss of their key functions in the ecosystem, which could end up producing ripple effects in the chains aquatic food.
