The XI National Congress of Geology (CNG) has come to an end, which took place throughout this week at the Department of Earth Sciences (DCT) of the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Coimbra (FCTUC).

Held in collaboration with the Geological Society of Portugal (SGP), the event featured more than three hundred presentations and brought together a wide range of national and international geoscientists.

During the four days of congress, the role of geosciences in facing the global challenges of contemporary society was discussed in depth, as well as multiple thematic sessions that debated scientific progress in this area, as well as plenary sessions on the most pressing issues for society and in which geosciences play a fundamental role.

This edition of the CNG also featured several training courses, field trips and thematic workshops, which were well attended by the almost 400 subscribers.

The final balance is positive, with synergies within the national Earth Sciences community having been reinforced and the preponderant role of this science for the development of a sustainable society being highlighted.
