Henrique Cavadas and Mariana Teixeira, Geology degree students, participated in an oceanographic cruise in the North Sea to acquire bathymetric, seismic and lithostratigraphic data.

The cruise took place between the 1st and 12th of September 2023 as part of the NORSEAT project - Storegga and beyond – North Sea tsunami deposits offshore Shetland Islands.

The campaign, co-led by Professor Pedro Costa, took place aboard the oceanographic vessel RV Belgica and involved 17 scientists from 7 countries.

Henrique Cavadas and Mariana Teixeira participated in carrying out 31 geological surveys in transition zones between open sea and fjords on the Shetland Islands.

In total, more than 190 meters of sediment were collected and will now be analyzed to determine geological signatures of tsunamis and accurately establish sea level variations in this region since the recent Dryas. Simultaneously, 4TB of geophysical data (Multibeam and Topas) were acquired in order to prepare the next oceanographic campaign that will take place at the end of Spring 2024.
