New geochemical, magnetic and mineralogical evidence in the Peniche Jurassic demonstrates the role of volcanism during the anoxic oceanic event of 183 million years ago
An investigation led by Eric Font and which includes other DCT-UC researchers (LV Duarte, Joana Ribeiro and Elsa Gomes) presents geochemical (mercury and stable isotopes of carbon and oxygen), magnetic and mineralogical evidence for the anoxic oceanic event of ca. . 183 million years old (Lower Toarcian, Early Jurassic), recorded in Portuguese geology. In an article published in Scientific Reports (https://doi.org/10.1038/s41598-022-08269-y), evidence of this event being a consequence of strong magmatic activity occurring in the Karoo-Ferrar province (Southern hemisphere) is pointed out.
