Research

Having originated in 1570-1590s from the idea of “investigating or studying something closely and with continued care”, by 1630s the concept of research gained the meaning of “diligent scientific inquiry and investigation directed to the discovery of some fact” we are so familiar with. Well into the 20th century, research has started to be increasingly linked with development and innovation.

In our centre, research, development and innovation go hand in hand while ranging in scale from an individual close investigation to small exploratory projects and short-term pilot actions, and then - to large-scale research developed in national/ international consortia, yet all of them in a dialogue/collaboration in Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. Our centre was founded 25 years ago as a centre for the production of interdisciplinary knowledge, amidst the ongoing “methodological revolution” (Denzin & Lincoln; 2008, vii), where “a blurring of disciplinary boundaries has occurred between the social sciences and humanities” (ibidem). That is why we at CEIS20 believe in getting scientists from different fields to work together on big complex issues.

CEIS20’s research strategy is advanced through four domain-crossing inquiries on crucial issues such as democracy, inequalities, post-digital era, and theories of arts and social technologies. Our researchers foster expertise and teamwork through eight disciplinary-centered groups. Research dynamics enact the Centre's unique culture open to new fields and methods, conceptual frameworks, training and technologies. Currently, it hosts four EU-funded projects (including an ERC and a MSCA) and several national projects. We embrace the principles of Open, Citizen, and sustainable science based on gender equality and diversity. Overall progress is monitored by an international Scientific Advisory Board of world-renowned specialists.

Research Axes

To promote interdisciplinarity and enable the links between its two thematic lines and seven groups (and clusters) of research, CEIS20 proposes to develop four interdisciplinary thematic areas of research capable of bringing together different areas of knowledge, enhance collaborative work and contribute to strengthening the Centre at regional, national and international scales. Having given some thought regarding the themes where the Centre has a significant wealth of production and knowledge transfer, as well as about the themes that need to be addressed due to their strategic nature, the Centre has decided that the following four areas are a priority, in particular frame to prepare applications for projects. By fostering the partnerships established through research networks and calling for a new culture of interdisciplinary work, we hope that they will also enable closer interaction with Advanced Training programmes.

Research Groups

Here you will find all the CEIS20 Groups, with their respective presentations and main lines of research.

Interdisciplinary Dialogues

CEIS20 has created spaces for debate, dialogue and reflection – CEIS20 Time for Reflection and Projectorium – in order to continuously improve the processes of research and scientific investigation and to promote new practices, themes and creative solutions. The Young Researchers Meeting should also be viewed in this context.
At the same time, the coordinators, lines, groups and the Editorial Board meet quarterly to promote opportunities to discuss and evaluate the research dynamics of the Centre, as well as the objectives, needs and organisation of various scientific events.

Projects

Even though limited in time and constrained by different types of institutional criteria bound within the requirements of various calls, research projects are the life-blood of any research centre. Funded through a variety of competitive and community channels, agreements, protocols and networks, from municipal, regional and national to bilateral and European ones, research projects contribute to the centre’s

  • (inter)national visibility and research community-building;
  • keeping up to date and creating innovative methodologies ;
  • peer recognition and international networks;
  • quality publications;
  • active engagement of stakeholders.

CEIS20 researchers develop individual projects funded through competitive agencies such as FCT, Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, and European Commission, as well as collaborate with the whole range of institutional actors in taking up research endeavors to address complex societal challenges.

To provide support for budding research initiatives by the CEIS20 researchers, CEIS20 Scientific Coordination has recently allocated funds to set up an internal funding programme for projects up to 12 months that serve as pilot actions for further competitive funding and consortium building.

Funding

This section provides essential information on the funding opportunities available to support scientific research. Our Centre provides comprehensive guidance on different sources of funding, such as European funding programmes, national funds and other funding possibilities, recognising the crucial role that funding plays in driving innovation and discovery.

Researcher’s Space

Created specifically to meet the needs of CEIS20 researchers, this space provides an organised comprehensive set of essential resources for their scientific activities, facilitating access to the main research support mechanisms.
