Coimbra Football Association – 100 years of history, Volume II, 1951-1990

Written by CEIS20 researchers Francisco Pinheiro (integrated researcher of Group1 – History, Memory, Public Policies and Group 6 – Communication, Journalism and Public Space) and José Calado, the second volume of "Associação de Futebol de Coimbra - 100 anos de história" (Coimbra Football Association - 100 years of history) is now available in open access (printed version is also available), dedicated to the origins of football in Coimbra and the early years of AF Coimbra. Following the chronological line of Volume I, dedicated to the origins of the AFC (1922-1950), this book covers the period between 1951 and 1990, focusing once again on the history (and stories) of one of the most important district associations in Portuguese football: the Coimbra Football Association. Teams, idols, rivalries, refereeing, internationalisation, class struggle and political change, competitions, regional geography, players’ rights, amateurism and professionalism, women's football, media coverage... key themes in the historical process of the Coimbra FA between the mid-20th century and the end of the 1980s. A period of structuring, diversification, popularisation and modernisation of an institution that has remained a benchmark in the context of Portuguese football.
