CEIS20 integrated researchers Sérgio Neto (Group 1 – and History, Memory, Public Policies, e Group 4 – Artistic Currents and Intellectual Movements) and Clara Serrano (Group 1 – History, Memory, Public Policies) co-authored the article “The edge of the Stone Raft. From euro-enthusiasm to moderate scepticism in Portuguese history textbooks (2000-2020)”.

Taking its title from José Saramago’s book A Jangada de Pedra (The Stone raft), this study analyses two samples of 9th grade history textbooks (2000-2020) to understand their evolution in terms of perceptions of the European Union (EU). It can be concluded that these perceptions oscillate between Euro-optimism and a moderate Euro-scepticism.

Integrated researcher Carlos Faísca (Group 1 – History, Memory, Public Policies, and Group 8 – Changing Landscapes. Long term LAB) co-authored the article “From raw materials to where the industry happens. Patterns of industry location in the Portuguese cork manufacturing industry, 1880–1980”.

The article analyses the processes of localisation and relocation that the Portuguese cork industry went through between the 1880s and the 1980s. In addition to the historical-geographical aspects of the cork industry, the relevance of the research lies in the fact that it analyses a paradigmatic case of a traditional industrial sector, the cork industry, which was vital for a developing country like Portugal at the end of the 19th century, where the change in the location of production coincided with the country’s rise to become the main manufacturing power in the sector.
