The Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies and the Institute for Interdisciplinary Research are coordinating a research project in Portugal, through the University of Coimbra, to analyse the development and growth of political extremism in everyday life and to design a strategy to promote non-extremist political and social dialogue. These are the core proposals of the OppAttune project – Countering Oppositional Political Extremism through Attuned Dialogue: Track, Attune, Limit. CEIS20 collaborating researcher Joana Ricarte is the project coordinator in Portugal.

As we have seen, there is a global increase in hate speech and extremist practices that threaten democratic institutions, such as the recent events in Brasilia. It is therefore necessary to understand the origins of these violent and extremist processes and to promote non-violent political and social dialogue.
