An Elephant in the Crystal Palace
CEIS20 researcher co-edits book resulting from the programme of the same name
Nuno Coelho, CEIS20 integrated researcher of Group1 – History, Memory, Public Policies, is the co-editor of the book “Um Elefante no Palácio de Cristal” (An Elephant in the Crystal Palace), which brings together the activities and contributions that resulted from the public programme of the same name, which explored the legacy of the First Portuguese Colonial Exhibition of 1934 in the gardens of Palácio de Cristal in Porto. The programme presented in 2021 was based on an invitation from the Municipal Gallery of Porto to three curators and a group of artists – Alexandra Balona, Melissa Rodrigues and Nuno Coelho together with InterStruct Collective – who proposed to revisit the event and explore its implications in the present day. The project, which has now been published as a book, included events for the general public and schools, such as debates, film screenings, workshops and tours led by researchers and artists.
