[BOOK] Creative Production and Management in the Performing Arts: Modus Operandi

This volume takes stock of the ways in which the regimes of artistic creation and production intersect, lending special attention to emergent discourses and work models of producing and managing theatre, dance, and performance – through the lenses of creative producers.

This book suggests that social protection failures, longstanding institutional shortcomings, and the dilemmas of social and environmental sustainability are pushing arts management and production modis operandi towards a review of its expansionist assumptions and managerial hyper-productivist processes. By documenting singular ‘counter-management’ experiences in Portugal, Belgium, France and Brazil, this study makes a strong claim for a reassessment of the role of producers and art managers as reflective practitioners and as pivotal elements towards more sustainable artistic practices.

This study will be of great interest to students and scholars in theatre and performance studies, policymakers, and cultural professionals.

[BOOK] AS PRODUTORAS - Produção e Gestão Cultural em Portugal. Trajectos Profissionais (1990-2019)

Throughout her career as a cultural manager, Vânia Rodrigues has met countless producers and managers linked to the performing arts. In this book, she gathers and problematises twenty-three accounts, presented in direct speech by eighteen women and five men, professionals from different generations, backgrounds and contexts. The collection and systematisation of this set of professional trajectories gives an account of the very constitution of the field of cultural production in Portugal: it recognises its decisive role in the country's artistic development; it considers its contribution to the sustainability of creative structures; and it analyses, in a particularly incisive way, the intersection that has taken place in recent decades between the regimes of creation and production. This volume fills a noticeable gap in the Portuguese publishing scene and invites us to reflect on working models in the cultural and creative sector.

[BOOK] Modus Operandi: Produção e Gestão nas Artes Performativas

Researcher Vânia Rodrigues once again pays attention to the experiences and perspectives of cultural producers and managers working in the field of performing arts, questioning the ethical and critical foundations of their professional practice. Here, arts management is considered in relation to models of collective work and the broader context of cultural policy in which it operates.
