15 December | 18:00 | RAMPA Gallery, Porto
The exhibition “Joaquim – O Conde de Ferreira e seu legado” (Joaquim – The Earl of Ferreira and his legacy), one of the results of the CEIS20 pilot action of the same name, coordinated and curated by Nuno Coelho, integrated researcher of Group 1, opens on 15 December at 18:00 at the RAMPA gallery in Porto.
The exhibition includes original works by Barbara Neves Alves & António Ramalho, Dori Nigro & Paulo Pinto, Francisca Calisto, João Ana, Ivo Tavares and Paulo Moreira & Thaís Freire de Andrade. On the same day, at 16:00, a talk with the artists and the curator will take place in the Aula Magna of the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto.
The exhibition will run until 17 February 2024.
Joaquim Ferreira dos Santos (Porto, 1782) rose from humble beginnings to become a wealthy man through the transatlantic slave trade in Brazil. On his return to Portugal in 1832, he invested in business and was a supporter of liberalism, earning him the title of Earl of Ferreira. After his death in 1866, his will earmarked funds for social projects, including the construction of the first mental hospital in Portugal (Hospital Conde de Ferreira) and the first primary school network in the country (120 Conde de Ferreira schools). However, the origin of his wealth is generally unknown to the society that benefits from it. By referring to this historical figure by his first name, symbolically dethroning him from his pedestal and stripping him of his title, the exhibition “Joaquim – O Conde de Ferreira e seu legado” aims to question and problematise this man, his legacy and what he represents today, with the help of professionals from the visual and performing arts, architecture and design. Complemented by a parallel programme of events, the exhibition aims to create a space for an urgent and necessary collective reflection on the past and present of Portuguese society.
