Mordecai Paldiel’s lecture, entitled “About the conscience and the courage to try to ‘save all those people’. The Righteous among the Nations and Aristides de Sousa Mendes” will also include contributions from the Sousa Mendes Foundation, CEIS20 and the UC Rectorate. The event will take place on 10 May at 17:00 in Amphitheatre III of the Faculty of Arts of the University of Coimbra.

There will be time for questions and answers from the audience. This event will also be streamed live on the CEIS20 Youtube channel.

Mordecai Paldiel was born in Antwerp, Belgium in 1937. During the war his family fled to France and in 1943 to Switzerland. He studied at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (economics and political science) and at Temple University in Philadelphia (M.A. and Ph.D., specialising in religious and Holocaust studies). From November 1982 to March 2007, he headed the Department of the Righteous among the Nations at Yad Vashem (Jerusalem), where he researched and honoured non-Jews who saved Jews during the Holocaust. In January 2013, he was the keynote speaker at the Annual Holocaust Remembrance Ceremony. He teaches at several North American universities and is a board member of the Sousa Mendes Foundation.
