Synopsis

This play, staged by Thíasos, continued a series of projects of dramatization of non-dramatic authors, to facilitate their understanding by young audiences.

Theochritus’s Idyll XV, known as The Women at the Adonis Festival, and Virgil’s Eclogue V are the texts addressed this time, presenting two visions of the old mime: the urban – in the case of the Greek author – and the rural – in the case of Virgil. In addition of the coincidence of themes that these poets present us, it is intended to give a scenic and imagery unity, to the extent that both texts have as background hymns of glorification of the two deities of Love and Beauty: Adonis and Daphnis.

In a first scene Praxinoa receives the visit of Gorgo and pushing through the crowd they try to reach the palace where the Adonias take place. They hear the beautiful and harmonious singing of a woman from Argos. The scenery becomes the mantuan arcadia where Menalcas and Mopsus execute a lyrical agon in celebration of Daphnis. Two muses, personifying the sound of poetry and time in nature, create the scenic picture of quietness.

Between the city and the countryside, the urban mime and the arcadia, Theocritus and Virgil were potential stage authors, when the strong visuals and realism of what they wrote is well assimilated.
