Synopsis

Electra, as a wounded lioness, embodies the darkest, most violent, and elementary forces of nature. For his part, her brother Orestes represents the model of the Apollonian hero, strong and carefree, beautiful, and full of light, even when, fulfilling the oracle of Apollo’s prophecy, kills his mother to avenge the murder of his father. The other characters that move around the two siblings are masterfully characterized, combined and arranged by Sophocles within a dramatic action that, conceived as a hunt, advances directly to the final trap in which the assassins will pay for their crime. With Clytemnestra’s and her lover Aegisthus’s deaths, the conflict that sets in motion the tragedy is solved: crime has to be paid up with crime. The dead’s vengeful Nemesis is thus placated.
